A "Living Well" podcast on the power of gratitude when things get overwhelming. A brief dive into neuroscience and scriptural encouragement plus one gratitude activity you can use every day.
I have been having quite bad anxiety attacks lately. Usually at nighttime.
Last night for the first time I tried the ‘Think 10’ and it started with think 5 over and over and then I got to 10.
I repeated these over and over and after a little while my mind was filled with gratitude. But I had to keep going as it was easy to get distracted with the anxious thoughts that were playing very strongly on my mind.
After I had began to feel more relaxed, for some reason I decided to sing (in my head 😂) the first few lines of the 23rd Psalm over and over. I think it was from a cassette my sister and I used to listen to when we were small.
‘The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want. He makes me down to lie. In pastures green he leadeth me the quiet waters by.’
I sang it in my head until I fell back to sleep.
Instead of the nightmare continuing, I slept ok.
I don’t know why I never thought to include God and his words about me in these ‘techniques’ before but the word of God, the Holy Spirit, prayer etc has to be the link that was missing when being told to do similar exercises in the past.
Maybe, there is a way out from this crippling anxiety I’ve been suffering from for almost 20 years?
Please don't apologise -thank you for sharing this. That's so, so good to hear that you're finding strategies that work for you and that you're able to bring your relationship with God into those too! Hooray!🙌 It's all about making these strategies personal to you ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for speaking wise words again. I have been living with crippling anxiety for over 20 years . And obviously over the years doctors have advised this and that and CBT etc etc. Non of which I’ve been able to get to grips with. ( when there is a million negative/ anxiety provoking thoughts whizzing round your head. It’s difficult to function) but I actually think this Speak 10 sounds like it is manageable.
I will make a positive mental note to do this.
I would appreciate people’s prayers as I begin this please!
Hi Claire, the key to all of these activities is making sure they are manageable and tailored to you, so I'm really glad you're going to give this a try. I'd love to hear how you get on. I'm not sure if you saw Anne's comment - she has written down a Speak 10 list to help her. You might find that useful too. Each week, I'll be using this Living Well podcast segment to share other activities and insights into Living Well - especially ones that relate to our emotions and habits. Take care x
A great idea Anne to make a list and not just rely on what comes to mind in the moment! Love this immediate action and response to start making a new habit ❤️. Thanks so much for encouraging me by letting me know x
